What Hypnotherapy Actually Feels Like — And Why It’s Not What You Think

Spring Haughton, Brooklyn hypnotherapist, on terracotta steps — Brooklyn Hypnotherapy

If you’ve ever hesitated to try hypnotherapy because you weren’t sure what to expect, you’re not alone. Most people’s ideas about hypnosis come from stage shows or movies — and the reality is completely different.

Let me walk you through what actually happens in a session, what you’ll experience, and why so many people leave wondering why they waited so long.

“Will I Be Unconscious?”

This is the most common question I hear — and the answer is no.

During hypnotherapy, you are awake, aware, and in control the entire time. You’ll hear everything I say. You can speak, move, and open your eyes whenever you choose. Hypnosis isn’t sleep, and it isn’t unconsciousness. It’s more like a deeply focused state of relaxation — the kind you might experience just before drifting off at night, or when you’re completely absorbed in a book and the world around you falls away.

In that state, the critical, analytical part of your mind quiets down just enough to allow your subconscious — the part of you that holds your habits, beliefs, and emotional responses — to become more receptive to change.

What a Session Actually Looks Like

A typical hypnotherapy session at Brooklyn Hypnotherapy begins with a conversation. Before anything else, we talk. I want to understand what’s bringing you in, what you’ve tried before, and what you’re hoping to feel differently about. This isn’t just intake — it shapes everything that follows.

From there, we move into the hypnosis itself. I’ll guide you into a relaxed state using your breath and simple imagery. There’s no swinging watch, no snapping fingers. It’s a gradual, gentle process — more like being guided into a comfortable chair than being pushed off a cliff.

Once you’re in that focused, receptive state, we do the actual work. Depending on what you came in for, that might look like:

•       Reframing — exploring and shifting the meaning you’ve attached to a memory, belief, or pattern

•       Parts work — identifying and communicating with different aspects of yourself that may be in conflict

•       Visualization — experiencing a future version of yourself that has already made the change

•       Suggestion — installing new, helpful responses at the level where your habits actually live

At the end of the session, I guide you back to full waking awareness. Most people describe feeling relaxed, clear-headed, and a little lighter — even after a first session.

What People Are Usually Surprised By

How normal it feels. Clients often expect something dramatic — a jolt, a blackout, a moment where they “go under.” Instead, it feels natural. Calm. Like a conversation with a quieter part of yourself.

How much they remember. You won’t wake up with a gap in your memory. Most people recall the session vividly — not as something that happened to them, but as something they actively participated in.

How quickly things can shift. Hypnotherapy works at the level of the subconscious mind, which is where most of our automatic responses — anxiety, avoidance, self-doubt — actually originate. Because we’re working at the source rather than managing symptoms, change can happen faster than people expect.

Is Hypnotherapy Right for You?

Hypnotherapy is particularly effective for anxiety, stress, sleep issues, relationship patterns, phobias, and breaking habits that feel stubborn despite your best conscious efforts. It works well for people who are open to the process and genuinely ready to shift — not because you have to “believe” in hypnosis for it to work, but because your own willingness is part of what makes the subconscious accessible.

It’s also worth knowing that not every approach to hypnotherapy is the same. My work integrates NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), somatic awareness, and a coaching framework — so sessions feel collaborative, not passive.

Ready to See for Yourself?

The best way to understand what hypnotherapy feels like is to experience it. I offer a free consultation for anyone considering working with me — it’s a no-pressure conversation where you can ask questions, share what’s going on, and get a feel for whether we’re a good fit.
